I highly recommend Casa Mimosa as a beautiful and central base for exploring this area of Costa Rica. We had the Buena Vista unit, but all units share the lovely pool, wildlife viewing platforms and the lovely Maritza and her family who take care of the house and guests. Having Maritza available to grocery shop and prepare snacks and meals for us was such an added treat. The homemade rice and beans, guacamole and cut-up fruit waiting for us at the end of a beach day was so appreciated. She also cooked us one of the most delicious fish dinners we have ever eaten. The house is spotless and the grounds are immaculate. Be sure to book an amazing therapeutic massage with Sharon (Maritza’s daughter). We also loved being up high enough to look out over the densely treed estuary and watch vultures, spoonbills, egrets and ibises flying over the trees all day. We did not see the resident howler monkeys, but they are often there. It is a few minutes walk to Playa Flamingo, which is a lovely beach – great for kids as the surf and undertow aren’t too strong (that being said, we also had some amazing body surfing days there). If you have a car, there are countless beaches to explore nearby. The staff at Tropical Homes of Costa Rica were wonderful and helpful. Be sure to read about their Pack with Purpose program that encourages guests to include some space in their luggage to donate goods to local community projects to help the warm Costa Ricans who are so hospitable and generous to the many tourists who visit their lovely little country.
