The trip from San Jose to the beach takes between 4 and 5 hours by car or bus. Many public buses make the trip every day, and there are multiple companies that provide shuttle transportation.
Take the Pan American highway north from San Jose, following signs for Frontera Nicaragua and Liberia. It will take an hour to leave the Central Valley, and then you will spend another hour driving through the winding mountain roads. Once passed the mountains, enjoy an easy drive through the rolling flat land of sugar cane fields on your way to Liberia.
For food, the restaurant Rincon Corobici rests alongside a river about 60km before Liberia in a little city called Canas. The Bramadero is a popular steakhouse located in the center if Liberia. At the main intersection in Liberia, stop at a gas stations of visit the strip of American fast food, including Subway, Burger King, and McDonald’s. Turn left at this intersection to head towards the airport and Playa Flamingo/Playa Potrero.
From the Liberia Airport
As you leave the Liberia airport, turn right on the main road towards Filadelfia and Playa Tamarindo. Head south 27.5 kms, pass through the town of Filadelphia and reach the town of Belen, marked by an intersection and a gas station.
At the intersection in Belen, turn Right, or West (turn just before the gas station) onto Route 155 and proceed another 4 km to an intersection and stop sign in the small village of Santa Ana. Turn left at this stop sign and go another 20 km through the rural farm country and mountains. After passing the gas station( Closed) in Il Llano and climbing the mountain you arrive in the town of Huacas.
At the intersection in Huacas, continue on the same road/bear Right towards Playa Flamingo. The fork that branches off to the Left will take you to Playa Tamarindo.
Travel another 1 km, passing the Super Compro grocery on your Right, and come to an intersection where you make a sharp Right towards Playa Flamingo. If you continue driving straight at this intersection you will come to the towns of Matapalo and Playa Grande.
Go 5.0 km to find the town of Brasilito, and after going over the bridge and 3 speed bumps, pass the Tikki’s Seaside Grill & Restaurant on your Right and take another 90 degree Right towards Playa Flamingo.
Drive another 3.9 km on this road and look to pass the mini market Super Massai on the Right hand side. Keep driving another 200 m and you will see the entrance to Tropical Homes of Costa Rica on the Left hand side.
