Tropical Homes of Costa Rica

All posts by tropicalhomescr

Greetings to one and all. and what a glorious existence it is to be in Costa Rica!  If you’re reading this, you are tuning in for the latest version of Tropical Homes‘ local news update.  With the full on advent of the green season, the rain is incredible, the roads are deteriorating, and there aren’t very many visitors to be seen.  If you’re out there and thinking about visiting during the rain, I highly recommend it, as this season in Costa Rica is like nothing you’ve experienced before.  The jungle is thriving, flowers are blooming, and personally I see at least 4 hummingbirds a day, so the wildlife is excited as well.

For those of us that are still here are still looking for something to do besides hide inside from the rain, have no fear.  Lots of entertainment options are available to the person willing to brave the monsoons!

  • Flamingo Beach Resort is hosting its Costa Rica culture/food night on Friday in their Arenas Restaurant.  The night includes a tipico Costa Rican dinner, a free glass of wine, and at 7:30 a dance group will be performing a typical Costa Rican dance for your pleasure.  The night begins at 6 pm and the cost is only $19, for more information check out the Flamingo Beach Resort.
  • Playa Flamingo has had some intermittent water issues this past week, with a crucial part broken and difficulty finding the replacement.  As always, during this time we were asked to conserve water, but even now please try to conserve water now so that we can prevent any water restrictions in the next season.
  • This Saturday, August the 25th is the monthly flea market/garage sale at The Village in Brasilito.  The garage sale is always held on the last Saturday of the month, and is from 9 am to 1pm.  For more information, contact Ros at info@conchalvillage.com.
  • For Americans living in the area that still feel the need to exercise their voting muscles in the US, all the information about who and what you can vote for, and how to do it can be found at www.VoteFromAbroad.org.

That’s it for now, have an amazing succession of moments in paradise, and perhaps I shall see you around!

It is with a large smile on my face that I begin writing the latest and most updated version of Tropical Homes’ local news update!  It is with much anticipations and appreciation that I confirm the rainy season has finally bloomed in the skies of Guanacaste.  The past three days saw much needed downpours of increasing fierceness until an incredible deluge this afternoon reiterated the arrival of the rain.  This is wonderful as it keeps the dust down, be beware new potholes with the rain and running water, or just slow down to see the beautiful countryside all around us!

Who knows what the world holds for each of one of us in our now moment, but in case you aren’t sure, here are a couple things around town that may come your way.

  • Be sure to call your mother tomorrow, for it is Mother’s Day in Costa Rica!  Festivities include karaoke, delicious food and drink specials, and other surprises at Don Brasilito’s.  Show up by 7pm to take part in all of the Mother’s Day fun.
  • Live music this week can be found at El Coconut Beach Club in Playa Potrero on August the 19th.  Don Carlos is serenading and playing up a storm, with the final show of the week this Sunday at 5pm.
  • If you love to surf, swim, or stare at giant waves crashing onto the beach, be sure to head to the sands tomorrow.  The swell watch says to expect 6 to 10 foot waves tomorrow, and are moving SSW, to be sure to head to your favorite spot.  Always remember to respect the waves, and stay out of the water if you are not comfortable.
  • A change to the liquor laws in Costa Rica now imposes a heavy fine, $355 to be exact, on drinking in the street or in public.  Exemptions are of course made for civic events, fiestas, or other such parties, but we’ll see how long it takes for this to be enforced.  The policy change also affects liquor licenses for bars, regulating the process to reduce corruption and stimulate businesses.

Thankfully this law only applies to drinking in the street, your favorite watering hole and pretty much every other place in Costa Rica will be fine. That’s it for now ya’ll, make the most of this amazing place every day, and perhaps our paths may cross!

Welcome back for the latest edition of Tropical Homes‘ local news update.  I am incredibly happy to be sharing this glorious moment with you all in this tropical paradise that never ceases to amaze me.  One of the things I love about this country is that you never know where your day will take you, and what amazing wonders and things experience along the way.

A brief yet welcome relief from the perpetual drought that has been plaguing the land this temprano de lluvia arrived yesterday in the form of some very refreshing rain storms.  The roads are now a bit less dry and dusty from the lack of rain, and I personally welcome many more days of rain to come to help replenish the water table and get land blooming once again.

What’s the word on the street, you ask?  What’s going on around town?  Let’s take a look at what I’ve heard lately.

  • The void left on the main road in Surfside by the exodus of Super Guido has finally been filled.  A new super in open in the exact same space, although it appears much more spacious now than it did before.  Be sure to sign the petition to get the new store to start carrying Arnold Palmer’s, and other such choice items the Guido offered us.
  • The amazing, underground, local pizza sensation Cara Pizza is now offering delivery for its delicious pies throughout Surfside for free, and to Flamingo and Potrero for only 2,000 colones.  For those of you that have not yet experienced Cara Pizza pies, they are by far my favorite, with delicious ingredients and a great product.  For more information, go to http://www.facebook.com/carapizza to look at a menu and see the hours, or call 2654-5572.
  • Although the Castle is again closed, do not fear, for Karaoke is again happening at The Shack on Saturday nights.  Come out and listen to all of the talented singers in town,  I may even be there to sing a song or two.

For now, it is time to rest.  Thanks for stopping by, and remember to enjoy every single moment that we have here in paradise!

After a whirlwind trip to the motherland of the US and A, it is great to return home to Costa Rica, and again be here to share with you all Tropical Homes‘ latest local news update.  The rainy season continues to not live up to its name, and we are faced with similar conditions of dryness as in the past few rainy seasons.  The newly grated roads around Surfside and Potrero are directly related to the dust storms frequenting the roads throughout town.  Let’s be sure to slow it down a bit, for one to enjoy every moment of this amazing place we happen to be at in the moment, and to let the roads stay nicer longer.

Yesterday was Guanacaste Day, celebrating the annexation of Guanacaste into Costa Rica.  The stores were closed, and the celebrations we fun.  But let’s look and see what’s going on down the road to tomorrow:

  • El Loco Fruitariano, located in the commercial center on the main Surfside road, is serving breakfast all day long, as well as amazing smoothies to satisfy any craving.  Stop by for some strawberry pancakes with Greven’s specialty syrup any time, always at a great price.
  • The live music at Marie’s Restaurant in Flamingo on Friday night is the talk around town.  The feature band Yerbabuena plays an incredible blend of music from both English and Latin origins, and they begin playing at 7 pm.  Reservations are recommended, and can be made by calling 2654-4136.
  • A huge congratulations goes out to the entire town of Playa Potrero for their efforts keeping our beaches clean and our town in pristine condition, earning us the honor of the Blue Flag from the government of Costa Rica.  The Blue Flag will be raised on the corner outside of the Coconut and Bahia del Sol at 8 am, followed by refreshments in the rancho at Bahia del Sol afterwards.  Keep up the great work people, and let’s keep our beaches clean!

That’s all for now folks, thanks for checking in, and perhaps we may pass each other on the roads.  But we probably won’t be able to see each other through the dust cloud.  Ciao for now!

Good morn, afternoon, or evening, depending upon where you find yourself reading the latest installment of Tropical Homes‘ local news update.  Personally, this moment of today finds me in the US of A, patiently waiting for my return to Costa Rica in the morning.  While it was a whirlwind of a time here in the States, I am as excited as ever to return to Costa Rica and the gloriously peaceful community that awaits me.

Although I may not be physically there, I still have my sources around town, and am here to share with you all what is going on in our beach community while I am absent!  Lots of things are going on, making this one excitingly atypical rainy season.

  • The Happy Snapper Restaurant and Bar in Brasilito is again keeping up its entertainment reputation by hosting some live music on Saturday night!  Paula will be singing Latin American songs and other American favorites starting at 8pm, and the microphone will be open if anyone else cares to shares a song or dance with the rest of the community.  It is sure to be entertaining, and the Macarena is almost guarenteed to be played.
  • Restaurant Mar y Sol in Flamingo has amazing weekend specials tonight that should definitely be taken advantage of.  Stop by for free bocas from 5 to 6pm, and two for one happy hour from 4 to 6pm.  Food specials include a blackened angus rib eye, seabass over fettucine alfredo, and fresh grouper served with a glass of your choice of house wine.  Mar y Sol will be closed on Sunday, July the 15th.
  • A new store is opening its doors in the Casa del Sol commercial center in Poterero centro on Monday the 16th!  The exact details remain a mystery, but I can tell you that it is a one of a kind store in the area that has something for everyone.  Feel free to stop by on Monday and see how the face of our community continues to change!

It is quite an exciting time in Costa Rica for a season that is normally calm and quite.  Let’s continue to ride the wave and share all of the good vibrations that are flowing throughout our beach community.  As always, it is a pleasure, and see you again next week!
